JAKARTA - Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir encourages state-owned companies to improve the quality of education in Islamic boarding schools in order to realize the progress of civilization and the Indonesian economy.

"We don't want the majority (Muslims) to only become foam in the Indonesian economy, but we must become waves that maintain the foundations of our country," said Erick Thohir in a statement received in Jakarta, Saturday (11/6/2022).

"Islamic boarding schools are very important for the national economy, so SOEs continue to encourage education in Islamic boarding schools to continue to be developed, so that they not only generate the people's economy but also the people's economy," said Erick Thohir.

The government has launched a collaboration program for BUMN Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) in East Java. The activity, which was centered at the Qomaruddin Islamic Boarding School, Bungah District, Gresik Regency, Friday (10/6), took the form of an applied business program or vocation of PesantrenPreneur for 26 Islamic boarding schools in East Java and assistance for the Madurese community, involving 42 state-owned companies.

The program, which was initiated by the Ministry of SOEs, began with the Training of Trainer (ToT) PesantrenPreneur 2022 which was attended by 78 caregivers.

TOT is a training activity for teacher caregivers to improve the quality of hard skills as a provision of knowledge and experience to be taught to students in Islamic boarding schools. The materials taught include technology and engineering, technology and information, health, agribusiness, fisheries, agrotechnology, business and management as well as make-up, and culinary arts.

"I want to build the independence of Islamic boarding schools and improve the skills of students so that they have an entrepreneurial spirit, can see business opportunities, utilize networks to collaborate, and apply digital-based technology," said Erick Thohir.

Furthermore, he hopes that the program will be a way for the domestic halal industry to flourish, considering that Indonesia is a Muslim in the world.

In addition to training, three state-owned companies namely Semen Indonesia, PLN, and Pelindo, representing 31 SOEs signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Airlangga.

The MoU includes assistance in implementing applied business education from BUMN and Airlangga University for Islamic boarding schools in East Java for one year.

Meanwhile, 21 other SOEs provide TJSL assistance for communities on Madura Island, especially in Sampang Regency. The assistance which aims to improve people's living standards is provided in the form of clean water facilities, renovation of people's docks, rehabilitation of mangroves, and the development of 15 MSMEs and BUMDes.
