The Miniseries Kretek Girl, which aired on Netflix in the last month, topped the Top 10 in 22 countries. In Indonesia, for 2 weeks since it was released in early November, it has become the champion. Apart from the dynamics of a triangular love story set in the transition from the Old Order to the New Order, this miniseries depicts the intense competition between kretek cigarette producers in Indonesia.

The existence of the tobacco products industry (IHT) has existed since the 1700s, and hand-rolled kretek cigarettes (SKT) are even believed to be the nation's cultural heritage. However, health studies show the large costs incurred, especially respiratory-related diseases. On the other hand, the size of the workforce involved and the government's dependence on excise revenue from IHT increases, along with the enlargement of the state budget managed by the government.
